Its what happens when you allow democrats free reign on a city for half a century- Detroit is a perfect example of what happens when you have libruls run a city- they start enriching themselves, their union cronies and the poor by giving away loads of free cash and other entitlements plus they create a massive government that cant pay for itself. This will be the future as the country embraces the welfare state with such entitlements as Obamacare, unemployment benefits, social security and others- you made your own bed so go lie in it.

The problem is the lack of industry. I have a friend who was in the busess of real estate investment in detroit. he says that today there are plenty of fixed up houses waiting to be rented out, the problem is there are no jobs so the only residents are poor and have bad credit. You can make the place as nice as you want, if economic base and jobs arn't there to support the population, its a waste.
