I wonder if they ever suspected all the Chinese made devices used by the pentagon and most of gov't itself may pose a security risk ? Or maybe they just believed the Chinese would never install snoop chips in that stuff.

Oh here's Trump openly making the case to let off ZTE a little bit in exchange for management shake up and a fine. lol
It's one thing to begin a trade war or at least move towards that...it's another to sanction companies especially situated in the tech sector that could be plausible threats to US security. Even under Obama we had begun to block Chinese companies from acquiring US companies.
