Biden Wins 2020 Election
Posted: Thu Nov 05, 2020 9:03 pmThe networks have been reluctant to call the race, but the writing is on the wall. Biden will win PA, NV, he'll probably take GA and AZ as well.
A few observations:
1) American democracy is going to be tested like never before. As expected, Trump is making some pretty deranged claims about fraud. This wouldn't be as concerning had Biden's victory been a landslide. America is divided, more so than ever before, and Trump would rather burn everything down than relinquish power. Even if he does step down, Biden won't have the benefit of any sort of normal transition.
2) Trump will likely get more than 70 million votes. That's enormous, and the second most by any candidate for president (Biden is 1st). Americans live in two completely different realities. I'm not sure how those realities get reconciled. Westerners often criticize countries like Iran and Russia for censoring social media, but to be quite honest that looks like it may be necessary in the 'free world'.
3) American democracy is in need of major reform. Political races should be publicly funded. 'Electioneering' should only be allowed in the few months preceding elections. Redistricting needs to be depoliticized. The number of congressional seats needs to expand, it hasn't changed in 100+ years! Abolish the ridiculous electoral college, and most importantly, abolish the Presidency, tame the Senate, and move towards a parliamentary system. The system in place simply doesn't work. It gives politicians horrific incentives that don't serve the interest of the people.
Get your shit together America, the world is watching and it ain't looking pretty.
