100% agree saz
you know the Cold War fundamentally changed American society to its core. and we should probably have some come to jesus meetings about all that -- you know, is the President actually Princeps in Chief? -- but on the other hand, we kinda have been lost without our foil; focusing our nation on Cold War II would really bring the whole country together again.

Been ages since I posted on this forum however, that being said, from an Australian perspective this whole deal has a kind of half baked feel to it.
Despite all that has been written about AUKUS I just get the feeling this is more about creating a distraction from domestic issues of each respective country than about addressing any real security concerns that we have about China.
Don't get me wrong there are genuine concerns that we all should have regarding China AND Russia but this kind of Donald Trump style diplomacy has jarred not only the EU but much of SE Asia.
Most important of all though is "what exactly is the plan?". Let's be honest AUKUS is not going to go to war with China\Russia etc any time soon, if ever.
The only way we can truly address the increasingly aggressive nature of Russia and China is by bringing more and more people on board and creating a unified stand.
The most powerful weapon the West has was never its military power, but its diplomatic power backed by its economic power. Is was able to offer an alternative and back it up with the neccessary cash. China can now match this, better than Russia ever could.
Few countries outside of AUKUS have viewed this as a positive step towards dealing with an increasingly aggressive China.
Indeed the fundamental problem is "what are we uniting against?".
Until that question can be answered in a truly meaningful way then everything we do from this point forward is just piss and wind!
