It's funny. I was in Vancouver BC the last few days visiting inlaws...the coverage of Portland protests and such in their media was hilarious. It's like looking at footage of another planet. Told my father-in-law, "I was just there the other day, same neighborhood, buying goddamn overpriced pastry for the office. Its seriously not whatever they're trying to tell you people up here". He doesn't get it. They've been fed a bizzaro funhouse mirror version of America for decades. We get back, drive the long way round to see all the devastation or whatever...there's nothing. No indication. Traffic wasn't even slowed down beyond the norm. Just the usual protesters showing up for their daily screaming match. Even went back over the Burnside bridge and back down the parkway. Nothing. Not even a mess. Just people holding signs, which has been the case for quite some time. I mean, it's Portland. They've been holding signs and carrying on for 4 years now.
So we get home, turn on the news...and there it is...all this crazy footage looping on CNN, portraying Portland as a nightmare Mad Max zone.
Legitimate fake news. Not as bad as the Canadian media, but that's driven by wishful thinking and some sort of weird national inferiority complex. No accounting for that. Clearly there are flare ups here and there, probably late at night that get a lot of coverage...but the sensationalism is pretty wild. Its 99% normal sauce. But what would I know? I only live here.
