the dark ages are also described as "the age of migrations". the huns pushed west, which pushed everyone west. it ended up with the fall of the roman empire and all that, but the goths, the visigoths, the vandals and all of them? they were refugees honestly, fleeing from war. the romans resisted the flood of women and children along with the fighting men, and the refugees with no where to go ended up sacking western civilization. this was a death toll around 8 million, which scaled up to mid-20th century was about 105 million people. (a number you can find in Plinker's book)

but yeah, today is just way worse than that

if you want to make an actual argument against it, it's that western civilization has caused one monumental problem: climate change. that is what all this wonder costs. you can argue it isn't worth it, but you can't argue that all those metrics are not better today because they simply are
