Yeah, the free upgrade from 8 to 9 rumor has been around for a couple of months.

Anyway if they want Win 8 to quickly go away and they want Win 8 users to dump 8 then keeping the Win 9 name makes more sense, IMO. If a user is going to upgrade from 8 going in numerlogical order should make more sense.. Yes?

I mean the average not very savy computer user would understand he can upgrade from 8 to 9 more easily than upgrading from 8 to 10.. Or maybe I'm over thinking this...

Its a stupid change. But MS hasn't really been known for their ability to "keep in touch" with consumers when it comes to this kind of thing.

Does it really mean much? No, but the change from 8 to 9 is a very dumb move because its just going to confuse people. If they were going to do a naming change, go all out. Windows 2014 or something. Windows 10 just seems like an arbitrary number. But yes, I get what they are trying to do here with the whole 10 thing. Just don't think its going go over as well as they are expecting.

Maybe 8.1=9?

MS is bad at math.

Some marketing guy in a power tie with $20K worth of fake teeth probably thought 10 sounded nicer than 9. Can't imagine any other explanation. Or maybe they want additional distance from 8? Is 8 a tainted number now?

Windows has never been strictly about numerical order. Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and eventually they went back to counting up one at a time. So skipping 9 is rather minor compared to past transgressions.

Yeah I think you're probably right that they are just skipping a number to distance themselves from 8, but the point is that like XP and Vista, it's all about branding and not about any logical order. I know 98 and 2000 correspond with the year they came out but that still doesn't make sense when previously they had been counting up from 1.

Before XP all the Win OS's did have a name for a reason(years of release), as Uber pointed out.. Which made sense..

But I think when MS went away from using years as names and named their OS XP, it threw MS totally off track on naming all post-XP OS's.. lol.. Because from XP on, the names have been helter-skelter, and all over the place.

Well its the same people that came up with the XBox One name I'm sure. That name didn't really make any sense either and a lot of people pointed that out. I don't know that it hurt sales any, but its just weird the way they do their naming on products at times. It makes one scratch the head.
