actually, they're more than mediocre considering how long they've held off and pushed back ISIS with what little equipment they have.

And don't forget that they also held off Saddam's army back in the day with no supplies from the US at all. I'm all for giving the Kurds heavy weaponry, but I think the powers at be in Washington are afraid of the shitstorm that would cause with Turkey.

i think they're more worried about the implication that iraq is not a united country by bypassing the iraqi government and arming minority groups within the country. turkey is basically a lost cause no matter what we do as long as erdogan is in power.

That would make sense except for the fact that we've historically had no problem bypassing Baghdad in order to fund and supply the Kurds. I think the concern is that giving the Kurds the weapons of a modern army would affect our basing and overflight rights in Turkey. Not worth the headache when we can just send in the Air Force to support them.

Also remember an independent Kurdishstan would be very reliant on Iran for trade with the outside world (encircled by hostile nations as they are) and probably grow closer with them....and we can't have that, for reasons.

I think our government needs Kurdistan to be sovereign state, also as our government would like to see Iraq divided on Shiite and Sunni Iraq. The more region is shattered into pieces, the more destabilized it is, and the poorer are countries there.

We have been arming the Kurds.

We need to continue doing it. The Kurds need a state of their own.

They already have a state of their own, it just isn't and won't be de jure for awhile. But there is no chance at all that the Kurds will ever submit to an Iraqi National Government again.
