Voting Might Need to be Mandatory

Postby micfranklin » Fri Mar 20, 2015 5:09 am

So sayeth Obama

(CNN)The president whose major policy achievement is mandatory health insurance thinks maybe voting should be mandatory, too.

Asked how to offset the influence of big money in politics, President Barack Obama suggested it's time to make voting a requirement.

"Other countries have mandatory voting," Obama said Wednesday in Cleveland, where he spoke about the importance of middle class economics, and was asked about the issue during a town hall.

"It would be transformative if everybody voted -- that would counteract money more than anything," he said, adding it was the first time he had shared the idea publicly.

No. Mandatory voting just means more dumbasses will be available to make poor(er) decisions regarding our nation's politics.

How in the hell would they make voting mandatory? I can't even fathom what kind of enforcement mechanism they could use that wouldn't cost us ridiculous amounts of money or waste even more of our time as citizens.

replicate the Australian system? I'm not a fan of compulsory voting. It ceases to be a right and becomes an obligation.

show some form of identification at the voting booth, get checked off a list, get a receipt of some kind. people still on the list the next day get sent a ticket.

I'd be in favor of it here. Canada already has a national electoral agency, we already require preregistration and identification, so the logistics would be super easy for us.

In the States, I imagine it being a nightmare to implement across all 50+ systems.
