is the problem that jordan is tribalistic or is the problem really that people see themselves as part of the ummah before they are part of a nation-state? because if jordan is tribalistic, ISIS is not part of any tribe friendly to them.

okay but if they see themselves as jordanian why would tribal politics play any role in their support of going after ISIS? i mean the father of the dead pilot didn't want any action taken initially because it was fellow muslims. plus there has been poll after poll detailing support for sharia, death penalties to apostates, etc. i think you're REALLY downplaying pan-islamism in large portions of the middle east.

They're all basically about the same thing but nonetheless highlight the degree to which socioeconomic conditions conducive to recruitment for ISIS are prevalent. Unity appears to be solid for now but depending on the way in which this handled by Jordan, this could play in ISIS' hands.

I'm torn about ISIS. On the one hand, I don't want us to descend into savagery and ignore international law and human rights, on the other hand, I want ISIS to be exterminated.

Could the allied forces have won WW2 without atrocities like the Dresden bombing? Could it be justified to defeat a greater evil? Can ISIS even be exterminated?

ISIS can only be dislocated. They are as much an idea as an actual force. We can scrape them off of the territory they've taken, but we can't exterminate them. Would just spawn more.

They need to be beaten down by someone, anyone, other than the West. There is nothing any of us can do without being branded "Crusaders".

The whole mid east situation seems to me like a two thousand year old war of revenge/retaliation. Seriously, its time to bury the hatchet, and not in each other.
