I'll ask again. What exactly do you wish these moderate muslims and their leaders to do (or think they're capable of doing) about the extremist elements in their countries, when for the past 11 years, we've spent $1.3 TRILLION, and lost more than 6000 armed troops and STILL haven't even reduced (let alone eliminated) those extremist elements in Afghanistan or Iraq, despite the fact that we're much much much MUCH better funded, armed and trained to deal with extremists than your common every day moderate muslim family is?

Depends on which extremists your talking about. AQ for example is more symbolic than actually potent these days, after years of being smashed under pianos.

But I agree with you that expecting the communities to do what amounts to purging the local xenophobic rednecks isn't any more practical there than here. Our moderates aren't going to hunt down crazy preachers who want to burn Korans...or the Westborough baptist church for example...or the KKK.

Though, if our rednecks were attacking embassies and murdering foreign officials, it wouldn't take long before they felt the pressure of a SWAT team boot heel pressing down on their windpipes....

They need to put some fear into their rednecks. We've got ours trained to mostly sit down and STFU...they only get weird in relatively non-destructive ways, usually. Over there the rednecks are still feeling empowered to go out in force and cause mayhem.

Look, you are talking about the practice of Bacha bazi. This occurs in Central Asia, not the Middle East. It is a common practice among the Pashtun, who are not Arabs and who do not live in the Middle East. They are Caucasian and live in Central Asia.
