i'd argue actually becoming a country is but one of the most destructive civil wars of all time definitely ranks as a close second.

maybe....thing is that the formation of the country was tinged with the tensions that ultimately led to the civil war. also one can argue that the civil war changed the lives of a greater part of the our population than the revolution actually did. most of our social/civil institutions were relatively unchanged from 1770 to 1790. same cannot be said 1860 to 1870.

you read about the death toll going up? they now think between 800,000 and 1,000,000+ people died in the CW.

think about it though. if we hadn't revolted, we'd be part of the commonwealth today. we'd be a parliamentary democracy with the queen as our head of state. we'd be much closer, culturally, to the UK than we are today. we'd basically be like canada or australia instead of whatever the hell it is we are today.

(bread scratchy) tough call. perhaps I change my statement to "most devastating". the country changed so much because of the CW.

Rebs were under-counting:

also they never counted the civilians killed. rarely did either army target civilians but the collateral damage of the war cause by famine and plague was devastating.

Non thinks round 1,000,000 probably died because of the CW.

comparing it to other civil wars right now based on body count... holy shit. some of those chinese civil wars killed 20-40 million people. even in ye olden days that's like a quarter of china's population.

looks like the no's lead right now. Though I don't know where the currently reported votes are coming from and wouldn't be able to draw much from it if I did so yeah I guess I don't know what's happening right now.
