Yes, it's been in Jerusalem, in that the capital was West Jerusalem. And then Israel decided it included all of Jerusalem in 1980. Thirteen years after it occupied it.

The thing is that Israel denies that it constituted annexation. So it's not like Washington at all.

Regardless of how they phrase it, that is what happened. They just walked in and took it. If Washington had done the same to some piece of land, it similarly wouldn't have changed its status as capital.

The law has been modified to include East Jerusalem. So...even if they don't want to call it an annexation...it effectively is. There is a legal basis for their exercise of sovereignty over it, regardless of the careful wording of politics.

Not that any of this matters of course, since they established their capital in Jerusalem in 1949, long before any of this. That they hadn't got around to unifying the city yet doesn't matter in the slightest.

So Israel agrees to split Jerusalem, recognizes that agreement in Knesset, declares West Jerusalem as the capital (1948), invades and de facto annexes it twenty years later (1967), followed by the decision to declare all of Jerusalem the capital thirteen years after that (1980)... And you are saying this issue was settled fifty years ago? What?

Even by your own logic - a country decides where it's capital is - it doesn't make sense, because the rest of Jerusalem wasn't annexed or occupied until at least 1967.

Israel is a lot like the US in this regard: enough smart and powerful people understand these far right policies are self destructive in the long run but domestic politics gives the far right excessive influence.
