This can probably all be blamed on the French and British, if you think about it. They foolishly carved up the area into more or less random mandates after the Ottomans fell with little consideration of the ethnography of the thing...and its been completely f**k ever since. Imagine going back to the post-WW1 and having those guys draw the lines according to a sane appraisal of the people involved, as opposed to ease of survey and administration. Kurdistan could have been a thing for a hundred years by now.

They didn't do it randomly. They did it on purpose, to ensure that these new nation states would never be strong. It was more sinister than merely being ignorant.

Actually the historical record is pretty clear. There are quite a few diplomatic cables that attest to this.
