it says that after initial jailing, "Norwegian diplomats secured her release to the local Norwegian Seamen's Church.". I don't know if she is currently in prison, but if not, i hope norway gets her out. that's just awful

Well, if you go there you should know that their cultural perspective is that women should not be outside the home without either their family or husband with them. They look at rape as a legitimate social punishment for breaking that taboo. Ergo the court doesn't punish rape in those circumstances.

It conflicts with our own concept of justice, but in their eyes justice has been served in these cases.

All societies use institutionalized rape as a form of social control. We use institutionalized homosexual rape as a motivational aid in the US, for example.
