The anger about the mine is being generate from their crooked ass tribal council, because they didn't get their grubby hands on a kickback. This is the same council that got federal grants for the Apache Gold Casino under the guise of community improvement. Take a drive thru Bylas, the town about ten miles down the road from me, and you'd think you were in some third world shithole. So while the typical Apache deals with rampant unemployment, alcoholism, drug use, and diabetes, council members line their pockets every chance they get.

casinos improve the communities though. the onodoga and oneida nations, for example, are thriving largely thanks to casinos and other business ventures the casinos led to. i don't see how that means they just wanted a kickback, nor how that invalidates their criticism of this deal.
