The US should have 2 year mandatory national service

Postby Leviathan » Wed Nov 13, 2013 1:53 pm

From the ages of 18-20, every US citizen should be required to perform mandatory national service, either military or civilian. Agree, or Disagree? If agree, what would your MNS program look like?

Agreed, I'd like to be president or be in Congress, unless those don't count as national service.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.

If it's mandatory, isn't this little more than a make-work situation like we had under Roosevelt?

Different intent. The main benefits as I see it would be getting all americans real world exposure before they make decisions regarding college, to expose all elements of american society to each other, the rest of the country and the outside world, and to give young individuals practical training they may be able to use in the civilian workforce.

So yea, we make them work in the Military, Peace Corps, Americrops, whatever. They have some life experience before making life altering decisions on careers and college, they are mixed in with rich poor black white english spanish north southern urban rural kids and perhaps gain some perspective and understanding, and they learn to fix humvees or computers or language or something that makes them more productive in their later careers.

USA gets BUFF military which goes to war less cause all moms won't stand for that when Jonny is in the army. We have more productive citizens with a common cultural bond (their 2 year service). Kids are more mature and have more experience making decisions about going to college and what they want to do in life.

I agree, although I think we can haggle on the details.

I agree with this actually. I think it would have done me a world of good to be in the military for a couple of years. I think the only stipulation, though, is those that only sign up for the 2 year mandatory not serve in combat, for a few reasons.

Firstly, it would be too easy for the military to use all this new blood as an expendable resource. Since these people are only in for two years, might as well put them out there on the front lines ASAP and let them die instead of the ones that are going to be in for 4+ years. I could really see this developing as an actual thought process by those in charge.

Secondly, those that don't really want to be there sure as hell aren't going to want to be on the front lines. They'll be a hindrance more than they would an asset most likely. So don't put them in that situation but put them in support positions in non-combat areas that are still helpful to the service as a whole.

I think this could potentially help solve a lot of the poverty/lazy/unemployment issues we have going on as well. The military can be an extremely valuable resource in teaching those with little-to-no-tradeskill-knowledge a craft in which they can hopefully find a job in once out of the service.

Volunteer sure, mandatory no. Not all 18yo are incapable of making good life altering decisions. Forcing an 18yo to gain some world perspective is also as likely to backfire as not. Hard to convince someone that age that they really don't know everything yet... got to learn it on their own at their own pace.

I would have resented the holy living shit outta being forced into anything at that age, let alone the military.
