The Brits were incredible engineering innovators (how many modern technologies did they invent/were they the first to try), but they have always built stuff to be kinda shoddy (cept whiskey and dogs). In ship building this was especially true and bit them in the ass during the world wars when the JIN and Kriegsmarine were able to deliver really nasty blows against them.
