So far, we're all (me included) thinking about "direct badassery". In other words, people (guys) that "directly" asserted themselves upon their environment or the world.
What about those who did it indirectly? Who has indirectly influenced the world?
In that case, it'd be hard to discount J. Edgar Hoover.
Or, what about Stalin?

Caesar is pretty clearly rhe most alpha. Maybe Augustus. Confident and secure enough that they won't f**k you up just because you talked some shit, but bad ass enough that they'll f**k you up if you pushed your luck too far.
