even if a president announced a plan to do something like Truss (and lets pretend we're not a global superpower with the world reserve currency so people would be spooked about it like in the UK) it wouldn't matter. details would still have to be hammered out first.

contrast this with Truss. she announces the plan with details and everyone loses their minds about it, because she was in charge of the government and she could literally decide to steer the ship into rocks if she wanted to

i think the british experience since Cameron has really highlighted some fundamental problems with investing the executive and legislative into one branch and basically a unicameral house as well (other examples include, i dunno, the national f**k convention)

If president Biden announced war, even if congress did not approve the funding for it, it would still have a global impact. The moral lesson here is "words matter" when you are the leader. The real difference between Britain and the US at the moment, indeed the US and the anglosphere as a whole, is respect for the democratic process and the institutions of government. The simple fact is that the US is losing this respect at an alarming rate and becoming less and less democratic as we speak.

Whether you like it or not, countries where the head of state is a monarch are generally more stable than ones where the head of state is elected. In England if the shit really hit the fan then the King (or Queen), with the limited powers that they have, can still have an impact albeit in a very indirect manner.

Regardless of the system though. If one party chooses to completely disrespect the conventions and customs of democracy, as is happening in the US, then no system of government could really work.

One additional factor that also needs to be discussed if we are to compare what's happening in Britain and what's happening in the US is the behavioural differences between the two conservative parties (UK Tories & US Republicans) as well as the differences between the behaviour of the general public as a whole.

This can best be understood by the simple fact that neither Boris or Liz had to resign. There was no law requiring them to do so. They did it becuase their elected party members where unhappy with their behaviour but more importantly the public was appalled by the behaviour and the polls are showing it.

Now compare that to what is happening in the US. With the exception of one or two elected Republicans no one is speaking out against Trump. More importantly none of the Republican base seems to be phased by any of the the antics going on.

The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.

which just goes to show how horrible the traitors within the walls of Congress really are

as MAGA played the role of Parisians marching to demand the legislature do whatever it is their firebrands convinced them to do, the real problem was the attempt to replay the coup of 18 Fructidor on the inside. In that coup, the election didn't turn out in their favor, so the directory made their own slates of electors from the precincts for a self-coup. the fact there were multiple slates of electors submitted from precincts was enough to annul in favor of the ones they wanted. it was all dressed up with the trappings of legalism. and this is what people like Ron Johnson were trying to do on January 6.

so Bolosonaro's defeat and *admission* of defeat is a welcome sign for Brazil. He doesn't have the numbers of co-conspirators in the rest of government to keep fighting. must be nice.

I will say things don't look as rosy as I thought a few months ago, but I still think Dems hold both. I got a feeling. maybe it's deranged hope.
