Best of luck. I'd say the US relationship with Japan/South Korea is stronger than that between the EU. By your own admission many of these nations don't pull their own weight and in unleashing this burden in the fashion that Trump has you welcome a level of chaos that adversaries stand to benefit from. Consider most of the Eastern Europe and Russia. Hungary. Azerbaijan. Georgia. Ukraine. The power vacuum is a vacuum because it's not being filled.

I understand the general notion of your argument but I think it requires a time and a place. This is neither the time nor the place. China is rapidly ascending, Russia is on the move on several fronts, and the EU is attempting it's best with Brexit/PESCO/ECB but it has been fraught. When you talk about power projection soft or hard I don't see the EU or Canada closing the gap that's been left in any time soon. I think that's partially because the dependency we fostered allowed those countries to become so focused on domestic issues and so insular that there's a sense that if they just stick to themselves nothing will come of it. A false sense of security. And I think the populations have yet to come to grips with that because these systems have shielded them so well from the effects.

But they will be felt soon enough.
