The timing of his meeting with trump had to be helpful. Maybe trump can do him a solid and tweet about nuking Barcelona or something.

lol Catalonia to declare independence from Spain in a "matter of days", according to Puigdemont.

My god Spain really screwed this up. What's next, a military occupation of the region and terrorism to oppose it? It's not as if the Catalans have any actual ability to fight off the rest of the country.

No, but all of the public staff are paid by Madrid, and the Catalan government doesn't really raise taxes on it's own. In short, they have no money and Madrid can cut off the taps at will. Independent Catalonia will also NOT be in the EU, which is an economic and political disaster for any region in Europe. In short, they really can't do that much and any declaration of independence or attempt to put it into effect will have horrendous economic consequences.

No way the Basque are going to sit on their hands while those f**k Catalunians get their "independence".
Galicia will follow soon afterwards.

And then the Costa del Sol will vote to become a crown dependency on the back of incredible turnout by leathery English pensioners.

Pleathery.

They couldn't be leathery in a country they weren't born in.

some galicians would probably favor union with portugal... but you're right that the loss of catalonia would cause the balkanization of iberia. andalusian, argonese, asturians, basque and navarran, catalans and balerics abd valencians, canarians, cantabrians, castilian, galicians, and leonese. not to mention the exclaves in cueta and melilla.

spain as an entity has since its foundations been something that had many ethnic groups. if one breaks they probably all will. hopefully Macron is up for leadership in this area, as a breakup of spain would certainly fall within France's sphere

TBF, most of Spain isn't as independence minded as others. From personal experience, cantabria, Asturias and anything in central Spain are pretty nationalist. Southern Spainairds didn't seem to give a f**k, but I lived there nearly 20 years ago so things may have changed.

It's hilarious to me that Spain started the reconquista and for centuries brutally repressed nonconformity and it somehow ended up the most fractured state in europe
