I don't care what happened with a supreme court seat 200 years ago, Galt. I just don't.
If we establish known tenures for justices, how do we prevent it being gamed? Hell, we're apparently making excuses for leaving a seat vacant for a year...even when its a total wild card. If we make them impeachable, how can they do their jobs?
We need to streamline the process, and force the government to actually do it's job. There needs to be some sort of timeframe, and failing that, a default.
On this topic...there are currently something like 100 unfilled federal judge seats. And no apparent impetus to fill them.

If there was tenure and each president could appointment one judge per term, it would be a known amount each president could appointment. Could also say that if none is agreed upon then a lottery of the next lower level of court (appeals, etc) will just result in one of them being on the court. This leaves everyone motivated to pick who they want, while also motivating them to be somewhat moderate to make sure they'll get appointed.

What the actual f**k. Did Spider just say if the Senate doesn't confirm a SCOTUS appointment, the next choice gets auto-confirmed? If you want to get rid of Senate confirmation just say that.

The Atlantic does a great job of laying out why this should change. Judges retired after less than a decade in the founders day.

There should be NO LIFETIME APPOINTMENTS for any position. Well, the only exclusion = prison inmate.

With the world economy coming on line fast, Finite will finally start to be a factor in man kinds affairs. Hope we can factor it in correctly. Finite has always been there, but never a real factor up until now.
