1.The public simply follows what they are led to believe by those that control society. Our public is encouraged to consume, because our mode of production is predicated on consumption.

2. The purpose of this article and others like it is to wake the public up to what is being done to the planet for profit. It's a matter of survival. If these levels of carbon continue to be released into the atmosphere it will destroy conditions that allow life to exist on this planet.

Anyway I think you missed the point. If we would have started researching alternative energy in the Carter era we would be much farther along now. But we didn't and now we are basically in the same place today.

I do find it notable that you immediately leapt to the defense of the businesses that literally create this untenable situation and tried to blame it on the public.

And I think you missed a couple of my points..

1)I agree we do follow what we are lead to believe.. .My point is now adays, as a society, we are more easily lead around.. Decades ago we weren't lead around as easily.. We have become a society of sheep..

2) wake the public? These kinds of articles and books have been around for decades.. The problem is my #1 point.. No one cares, no one in the public is listening..

3) There was most certainly R&D during, and after Carter.. Saying there was NONE is ridiculous.. The reason we are in the same place is because of many reasons.. IMO one of the biggest was the cheap gas and the easy money during the 90's.. And a big reason NOW is politics. There are alternatives out there.

4) I'm defending businesses? LOL No, I'm being honest.. In this case it takes 2 to tango..

For you to constantly blame the US, the Corps, and Capitalism for every single problem in the world really does more harm then good.. I'm one of the BIGGEST critics of corporate greed and corporate crimes on this board.. Yet because I pointed out other reasons for our dependence on oil you are saying I am giving a blanket defense to the oil companies?

I didn't say there was no R&D the article stated, and I agree, that there were no results that were of any consequence. Which seems to be true. We simply do not have anything that can match the energy output and convenience of combusting hydrocarbons. We have a couple of inadequate electric cars. Most people won't consider them at this stage in the game.

We know there are alternatives, but none have really been explored enough to be a viable alternative. I'm afraid that if we wait until hydrocarbons are depleted to deal with the issue it will be a catastrophe for our society.

Yet that seems to be our present course.
