Would the US be the same without credit?

It seems like a lot of stuff in the US is play money, like having a huge house from a 30 year loan, etc... if people didn't have the option for these loans and the consequences of defaulting on them (fear of ending in the streets) would the US look the same? Or would it look like a 3rd world country where people just build the homes they can afford?
