RadioShack declares Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Postby Southern Dad » Fri Feb 06, 2015 10:48 am

After years of struggling to adapt to the digital era, RadioShack on Thursday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Under the agreement, the hedge fund Standard General will purchase up to 2,400 of RadioShack’s stores. Wireless carrier Sprint will establish a “store within a store” model in up to 1,750 of the stores acquired ty Standard General. RadioShack plans to close the rest of the stores that it owns, which currently number 4,000.

as reported in The Washington Post

This news saddens me. As a geek, I grew up visiting Radio Shack. It was my favorite store. I remember buying parts to build my first cable converter box there. Radio Shack, unfortunately sells something that few people need in today's world. Anyone remember the Battery Club?

I'm going to need Radio Shack to provide me with their name and address before they can purchase this bankruptcy. Most annoying store ever.

A full page ROP ad in the newspaper. Now that was some revenue.

well tbf what was nice about radioshack wasn't their gadgets. it was in the back corner and had all sorts of components. while it's easy enough to order online, it's harder to figure out what you need online than browsing those drawers

And you had to spend 10 minutes checking out for a $1 adapter or special plug of some type. f**k annoying as shit.

Their business model was also based upon the premise of a customer saying no 3 times before they'd stop attempting to upsale you on something. That was a corporate mandate of theirs, I'm not making it up. It's no wonder they failed. Their headquarters is in my neck of the woods, and we've been hearing about the possible failure for decades now. That ship took forever to go under. Someone should have hit it with an extra torpedo years ago to speed up the inevitable.

The Radio Shack in our town is in an office furniture store. Over the years, I've seen the RS take up less and less square footage. In Dahlonega, the RS is in a pharmacy.

We used to have one many moons ago during the Trash 80 days. I learned about computers on one of those during HS.

The real RadioShack was slain by the internet years ago.

Its been a silly cell phone store for quite some time. I went in a couple years back for a simple USB cable, and they didn't have the sort I needed, and a good thing too as the others were something like $20. Plus, the components section had been reduced to a single file cabinet sized set of drawers. The sap they had working there simply couldn't care less about anything.

When I was a kid I used to scrape together change to buy little motors and LEDs and piezo disks and such. Good times.
