Ok I should have labeled the wires. I'm thinking the extra one is actually for an outlet on the same wall. I'm going to have to strip everything down and test and label each wire individual because I've mixed them up so much at this point (along with the extra wire for this outlet) that it's not clear what goes anywhere except for the line in one box. I will regroup in the morning.

So I got all of the switches installed, and all of the three way ones are wrong. Even the earlier ones I installed, they are mostly right, but there are one or two combinations of switches where things don't work properly. I'm going to have to redo the circuits on all 4 sets of three way switches, but I labeled the final two I put in so those are correct on one end at least. f**k this I wish I knew three ways were such a disaster, f**k instructions could have at least said to take pictures and label BEFORE disassembling.

Ok, got 3 of the 4 circuits corrected. Everything working except that last 3 way switch I never figured out yesterday. I kept tripping the breaker for some reason, I guess when I shove the wires in there the ground touched something or went missing? Anyway, I disassembled half the breaker box as well but everything is now working. fingers are tingling but that may just be from doing manual labor for more than an hour.

It's time for Caesar to return to Rome. I've got two hours, 4 beers and some questionable internet advice, so I'll be damned if these switches aren't ready by sundown.

I did but I went by the wire colour coding when in fact that appears just to be random other than neutral and ground. And once you screw up the original circuit (I skipped the labelling the wires step obviously) it’s a huge pain to get back. my boxes are also small so when I crammed everything in there it would often disconnect or the wrong wires would touch. I also spent several hours trying to fix a circuit thinking the common was hot on the second switch when in fact it’s cold and the traveller is hot, unlike the first switch. Plus there was this 5th wire that went to an outlet that I thought was part of the circuit. Good thing I’m a problem solver
