Not talking about the ship. Talking about the camera work, color grading, and lighting. The overall aesthetic. You're right though, this is much darker. Much easier to do darker on TV. The ship in that trailer, btw, is not the Discovery. It's the USS Shenzhou:

Which is so goddamn awful and the backlash from the fans so intense, that it doesn't even appear in the trailer. Perhaps they'll come through and wow us with a surprise redesign.

I'll give it a chance. People seem pissed in the same way they were pissed about Enterprise: They want a continuation of the prime timeline where Voyager left off. They want a fourth show like TNG/DS9/VOY...but they aren't going to get it it. That's 1980's format TV and it doesn't work anymore. Audiences just aren't tolerant of that kind of campiness. I grew up with that stuff, so I'm down. But the younger audiences would roll their eyes hard at something like Neelix today, or those DS9 Ferengi episodes. That sort of humor and episodic lightweight storytelling just doesn't get a pass anymore.
They needed to find a way to refresh this thing for a new generation that is accustomed to excellent TV, but retain the established fans. And 21st century TV (leaving aside the usual trashy reality shows and such) really is massively better than it was in the Trek heyday. But they seem to have popped a middle finger to the fans and have gone the route of trying to attract the JJ Verse kids instead. Which is a mistake. Trek on TV is not the same as Trek at the movies. And Les Moonves is an old fart who doesn't have a goddamn clue about any of this.

We'll really they could just do a GotR focus and it'd appeal better. But they won't because they really can't on cable.
Cable television is kinda dying for that reason IMO.
