polygon and CoD WWII

does polygon have any bit of journalistic integrity?

here's an opinion piece they put out about the trailer for Call of Duty: World War II. The Call of Duty game is going back to its roots about World Wars.

https://www.polygon.com/2017/4/26/15438 ... -diversity

Since American pop culture took control of World War II as a narrative, it’s always been presented as a white man’s war.

uh.... it was a white man's war. Russians? White men (and some women, this is true). Germans? White men. British? (Most all) white men. Americans? (Most all) white men. The war was started by white men (euopean f**k) and ended by white men (americans)

But here's the most jarring thing:

Playability is the special obligation of interactive entertainment in telling a story, an obligation that movies like The Guns of Navarone or The Longest Day don’t face, even in hindsight 50 years later. A lot of different people are going to play Call of Duty: WWII. Just because brothers of different races didn’t fight alongside each other doesn’t mean that players in the year 2017 shouldn’t inhabit and absorb all their experiences.

20 million Russians died, and 20 million chinese died. But neither of these are the campaigns for COD:WWII. the campaign looks like it's Normandy (i don't understand why they don't have Sabaton music roaring in the preview) and its of the american perspective. i'd love to have a russian campaign in a game, but that's not what sells, normady sells. but either way, it's not going to be f**k diverse. it's a bunch of white dudes invading a place that is being held by a bunch of white dudes. and this guy wants to be able to play as a transgender black-asian furry or some f**k shit and i hate people

SJW hate aside, I would love to see a storyline featuring that guy who became a genuine war chief after completing the requirements during WWII. Even stole a German horse. Awesome.

absolutely. i would love to see a movie or a game about Joe Medicine Crow. it's got a great name already for either (Counting Coup, although it could be The Last Warchief. i think Counting Coup is better though)

but that's not what this is talking about. this is about making the army integrated when it wasn't. black soldiers were in one division that saw combat in europe, and it was in italy, not normandy/france. most were relegated to logistics like trucking. "The Red Ball Express" was the name of the route for logisitics and of a movie in the 50s I never saw, but it dealt with this. i'd wager that has a lot of white people in it even though 3/4ths of red ball express drivers were black. the 1970s sitcome "Roll Out" was african american actors in this roll of Red Ball Express drivers. possibly a game would make sense if it's just into the logistics aspect of the war, which could be interesting, but certainly not a first person shooter. it's mentioned in company of heros

Polygon has been shit for years.

There are plenty of legit ways they could work diversity into this game, even if focusing on the usual overdone stuff like Normandy. For example, the the Black Panthers (the tank battalion) actually did land at Normandy. They wound up fighting across Europe and fought all the way up the Battle of Bulge iirc. They could also work in the Tuskegee men, etc etc. They could even do some social commentary stuff about all the black truck drivers, rear echelon, and the mistreatment and segregation. Lots of room. A couple hundred thousand black people alone (leaving aside entirely the other ethnicity Polygon clearly doesn't give a shit about) served in that war. Not a big effort to do something with them.

But to actually revise history to portray a bunch of black combat soldiers charging up Omaha beach, side by side with the white ones, is to disrespect the reality of segregation and what those guys went through and why. Projecting a bunch of 21st century values onto the 1940's as if all that nasty never happened is always offensive.

Polygon ranted about the lack of diversity in the Witcher as well. Middle Ages Polish fantasy world, white characters written by a white Polish dude and a game developed by a Polish studio based on said writing and Polish folklore...and they are supposed to project it through contemporary American race baggage in order to appease the ignorati? Yeah, this is also a thing that happened.
