The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment of All Time

Why are techno-futurists so freaked out by Roko’s Basilisk?

The problem is not the basilisk, it is in US.

no the article explains it. "us" not being an acronym. it's kinda interesting but i don't think it's a real problem. even if people think about the basilisk, whatever robot overlord emerges isn't necessarily anything like that one and so serving him or not serving him before he emerges doesn't matter

the article talks abpout how some blog went through some self destruction because their utilitarianism takes them to the point where torturing someone for their entire life is LessWrong than everybody else getting a spec of dust in their eye, so when someone brought up The Basilisk they nearly committed seppuku

Non is lost....

the basis of the basilisk comes from timeless decision theory and specifically newcomb's paradox/problem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcomb's_paradox

basically one person says he can predict the future, and he offers you two choices. you can choose the right door and collect 100 dollars. you can choose the left door and collect one million dollars OR nothing, a 50, 50 chance for you. or you can choose both doors, in which case you get at least 100 dollars. however, he has a super amazing computer that can predict the future and has never been wrong and if it predicted that you would chose both doors he put nothing behind the door on the left, and if it predicted you would pick the door on the left he put a million there

so stemming from that, if there is a super intellegence robot overlord in the future, and you think about its existence now, you have two choices. one, ensure that His Amazing Robotness comes to power in the left door, or, behind the right door, Nothing or actual torture by a super intelligent robot overlord mad at you for not hastening his existence. the thought experiment has to do with actually thinking about the Basilisk coming into being.

and I said it was all bullshit and doesn't matter.

(shrug) maybe, personally I don't think so but I think Jesus would have an issue with the evil robot yanking my consciousness out of Valhalla and back down to earth.
