i actually just wrote a large paper on marxism and globalization, the premise being that if marxism is opposed to a framework of globalization, it must therefor support individual nation states which belies nationalism.

Well, that's nonsense.They are trying to reclaim their markets because we control them (imperialism). These are victims of mercantilism, not the perpetrators.
Yeah, we do things using soft power a lot, but the fact remains we control much of the world's markets. The reason we are engaged in warfare is to retain or gain control of those markets.
