Anyone wanna read some fascism and shoot the shit?

Anyone wanna read some fascism and shoot the shit?

So the inspiration for this is that I have been enamored with military history and all things Clausewitzian lately.

There's this really f**k cool looking essay by Carl Schmitt, who is apparently smart, a good writer, a knowledgeable history guy, has probably read On War 20 times (and you should too), and an all around historically important public intellectual - also he was total nazi.

I was thinking of reading an essay of his called Theory of the Partisan (1962) wherein Schmitt develops a theory of partisan warfare and situates it within the context of the global struggle between the bourgeois order and revolutionary socialism, between colonialism and national liberation struggles. Its less than 100 pages and looks pretty fun. Anyone wanna read it and dick around on the internet? Anyone wanna do some theory of war?

pdf:

I scrolled to the middle and picked up the following randomish snapshot of his content and prose.

A further touchstone that imposes itself on us in present times is the intense political commitment which sets the partisan apart from other fighters. The intensely political character of the partisan is crucial since he has to be distinguished from the common thief and criminal, whose motives aim at private enrichment. This conceptual criterion of his politi-calcharacter possesses—in its exact inversion—the very same structure as the case of pirates in maritime law, whose concept is based on the unpoliti-calcharacter of his bad deed which aim at private theft and profit. The pirate is possessed of what jurisprudence knows as animus furandi[felo-nious intent]. The partisan, by contrast, fights on a political front, and it is precisely the political character of his action that brings to the fore again the original sense of the word partisan. The word is derived from Partei [party] and refers to the relation to some kind of fighting, warring, or polit-ically active party or group. Such connections to a party are particularly strong in revolutionary times.

In revolutionary war, adherence to a revolutionary party implies noth-ing less than total integration [Erfassung]. Other groups and associations, and in particular the state in its current form, are no longer able to integrate their members and adherents so totally as a revolutionary party does its active fighters. In the wide-ranging discussions about the so-called total state, it has not been noticed yet that it is not the stateas such today, but the revolutionary partyas such that represents [22] the proper and ultimately only totalitarian organization. Purely organizationally, in terms of the strict function of command and obedience, it must even be said that in this regard many revolutionary organizations must be considered superior to many reg-ular troops, and that a certain confusion in international martial law has to arise when organization as such becomes the criterion of regularity as hap-pened in the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 (v. infrap. 31).

Ugh. If I do read it, I'll find it difficult to bypass his premises.

Sure prickly, whenevr i'm bored I'll try and pick this up and maybe we can have a discussion. I don't know jack about Clausewitz but I tried reading Nomos of the Earth once, which is Schmitt's book about changes in the international order. Seems to be a pretty interesting if politically messed up character.

pg 52 wrote:....the interconnectedness with world-political fronts and contexts, has likewise long since been brought to bear on our common awareness. The autochthonous defenders of the home soil, who died pro aris et focis [for our altars and our hearths], the national and patriotic heroes who went into the woods, all elemental, telluric force in reaction to foreign invasion: it has all come under an international and transnational central control that provides assistance and support, but only in the interest of its own quite distinct world-aggressive purposes and that, depending on how things stand, either protects or abandons.

I wish this were true. sigh

Are we going to talk about On War or Theory of the Partisan?
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.

Well, as per my original post, Theory of the Partisan.... Which, having finished it, I can definitively say is totally cool. Example of the Nazi swag:

p54, on the technological sophistication of modern partisans wrote:The dead ride fast, and when provided with wheels they move even faster.

But, you know, whatever you like.

meh the nazis sort of sucked at partisan warfare when their turn came to fight invaders off so that's a lot of fine talk and not much substance

I'd rather discuss che's guerilla warfare, but you're probably bored by that
