Also, getting angry about cultural appropriation is f**k stupid. The concept of cultural appropriation was developed to describe the way that marginalized groups in society adopting little things from the dominant group’s culture and making it their own. It was considered a good thing that showed different groups were able to maintain their unique identities while feeling that they were able to at least partially assimilate at the same time. Take jazz music as an example. Jazz, at its roots, is decidedly a product of African-American culture. But common jazz instruments such as the saxophone, trumpet and piano are all historically instruments of European music and heritage. Black musicians culturally appropriate these instruments of European culture and used them to make a new genre of music within black culture. That’s cultural appropriation and there’s nothing inherently bad about it.

Of course, there are plenty of instances in which white people use cultural appropriation in a manner that is overtly disrespectful and belittling toward the people whose culture they are appropriating, and that’s not cool. But instead of caring that it’s cultural appropriation, we can instead just condemn it for being disrespectful.
