But what if he really did? Then the police would've blamed for not talking action despite the warning.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
If guns are not outlawed, the in-laws will have guns.

He deserves eight years for being a moron. You don't joke about that stuff to strangers... not IRL, not on the internet, not ever. Being unable to foresee why doing so is a bad idea is a very strong sign of stupidity.
The cops should have checked him out and given him a scare... I don't really think he should be punished... just made to realize how utterly stupid he is.
