because even though the common denominator to your loses was you, you refused to believe it, and instead blamed random people on the internet, which can be quite enraging

When I used to play LoL I just played with friends for the most part. I was fine playing with pugs but they were all sonpissy and hateful most of the time. Even info was chill and notnpissed about losing, I'd have to just put people on ignore because they just wouldn't stop harassing people.

...I didn't rip his head off. I was mildly annoyed at worst.

There's a perception among the ignorati that PC gaming is just low budget indie games and MOBO's, with a few RTS's thrown in. And, considering the tens of millions playing MOBAs (which I've never really understood...people get so toxic), its not a completely unfair generalization. Then, you've got people who have no concept of mouse and keyboard, and imagine everyone playing FPS games with console controllers plugged into PC's. So, after repeatedly coming across this nonsense for years on end, when I hear "PC games" from someone who doesn't know what their talking about, I make assumptions.

Apologies to Phos if he's not working under either of the two misconceptions above.

this fall steam is coming out with steam link ($50) and steam controller ($50). the controller has a mousepad on it. steam link hooks up your computer to your tv wirelessly and streams games. since it's over your home network at like 10gig a sec your beefy computer can render everything in 1080p and way better than a console can. you can use wired peripherals as well hooked up into it. what this will allow is for you to play just about any game on your tv (and steam streams non-steam games as well, already). the only things left for consoles then are a few select games that are exclusive to those platforms, otherwise, these types of things will be killing them entirely

As for the steam controller...god it seems terrible to me. I'll really have to get one in my hands and try it out. I'm not really that into PC games on the TV anymore, because its getting to the point where 1080 is far too low of a resolution. Just looks shitty on a screen that big. Plus...the image quality on a TV leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe there are better TV's out there for gaming. After 4K TV digs in, it can be revisited. I just really like higher resolutions and refresh rate synchronization. Hard to go back at this point.

I'm a bit more pessimistic about the whole thing than you, I guess. I view the consoles as a really low bar that has become the lowest common denominator, dragging the entire industry down to a decade in the past, technologically. Publishers want to sell games on consoles, developers want to spend less on games by not continually having to come up with more and more detailed and difficult assets, and fewer and fewer people are interested in powerful stationary hardware. People want everything to be mobile. Look at the crazy gaming laptops we've got now. Even I bought one. Games are almost without exception loaded down with micro-transactions and parts of the game hacked out and sold as DLC. Stupid multiplayer modes are tacked onto everything. A lot of games are full price and nothing but a multiplayer mode.

I've been in the hobby since I was a teenager...but damn. I don't recognize it anymore. I'm just holding on to see how the high end GPU's deal with 4K next generation, and virtual reality. With proper software support, VR could bring some life back into this thing for me.

GamersGate Founder Departs Following Anti-#GamerGate Hate Campaign

GamersGate is a digital distribution service. It came out around 2004 and was originally an arm of Paradox Interactive to help gamers get a hold of their games in a more convenient fashion, as reported by Gamasutra. Following confusion and a hate campaign against GamersGate from a group of people out to send hatemail and threats to anyone using #GamerGate on Twitter, a report is claiming that the irrecoverable overlap between the two names helped with the decision for key business managers to take leave of the company.

Swedish website Kit published an article on May 27th, 2015 explaining that in late 2014 GamersGate came under fire from organized groups standing against #GamerGate. They sent hatemail and death threats to the employees at GamersGate.

nice

although this article also linked to another one from a couple months ago

As a consumer revolt aimed at reforming ethics in media, #GamerGate has seen remarkable success. However, the opposite side of the narrative – the one painted by the media outlets that #GamerGate is at war with – paints #GamerGate as a harassment campaign against women in the tech industry. As a harassment campaign the movement has seen eight months of pure failure across the board.

In fact, #GamerGate actually managed to bring more women into the gaming industry by funding a female-focused GameJam to get more female developers in the industry, as well as helping more women attain positions at gaming websites and outlets.

If you read websites like Ars Technica or Polygon, you would be led to believe that for the past three quarters of a year that hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, using a single hashtag millions of times, and spanning the likes of every political spectrum, groups from the LGBQT community, minorities, women, scholars and even feminists, are all aimed at trying to get women out of the tech and gaming industry.

Of course, there’s a bit of a hole in the media’s narrative. First up, you’ll find that none of these websites have provided any evidence that #GamerGate is a harassment campaign. Usually if someone points a finger to incriminate someone, they’re required to back it up with some kind of evidence. The only thing the media uses to link #GamerGate to harassment are two random Twitter trolls who didn’t even use the hashtag. Evidence beyond this is still lacking to this very day, other than he said/she said allegations and a Newsweek article showing statistics that it’s actually about ethics in journalism. In fact, the entire Wikipedia entry for #GamerGate is made up mostly of unsubstantiated opinions and allegations based on nothing more than hearsay.

So if #GamerGate fails on the harassment front and has succeeded in driving zero women out of the industry with rape or death threats, but has managed to bring in more women into the gaming industry, then what is it about? Ethics… perhaps?

As a movement for ethics reform, #GamerGate managed to get Polygon, Kotaku, Destructoid and The Escapist to alter their ethics policies back during the early days of the conflict. Since then, sites like Eurogamer, IGN, PC Gamer, the entirety of Gawker, The Verge and even Valve’s Steam have all updated their privacy and ethics policies regarding disclosure.

But why? Why would all these sites overhaul their ethics policies if #GamerGate wasn’t about ethics in journalism? Why would they bother?

    ...

It turns out that things were even more nefarious than some people thought. Beyond games journalists sleeping with their subjects and using cronyism to advanced themselves and their friends, it was also discovered that they also used their platforms to suppress information that didn’t fit their narratives, as well as blacklist certain individuals and topics that they felt undeserving of coverage. This even extended to colluding to fire and blacklist a journalist that exposed a controversial crowd-funding campaign that turned out to be used to defraud consumers. One of the worst offenses was a games journalist who opted not to report that 40,000 people had their information hacked and stolen because he didn’t want to risk his relationship with an Electronic Arts representative that he was dating at the time.

Thinking about picking up Ori. And anyone who hasn't yet should score Homeworld.
