Good for them. Not a big Google fan since I don't think they really make that great of products yet, but at least they are finally realizing they have to be serious about Chrome/Android if they want it to continue to succeed. They really need to drop these low-tier hardware manufacturers too. Really, they should drop all of them and just sell Google phones.

The Apple model is for luxury goods and high-end brands. It does not and will not work for everyone, but especially not for Google.

It actually would work very well for Google. They already offer free software that many people use, + Youtube, etc... so by producing (and these products don't have to be expensive, ya know) their own branded hardware, they would be set to cash in.

The whole relying on Samsung model isn't sustainable.

Again, you don't have to sell luxury products, but you do have to develop and maintain a brand, and brand recognition.

When you have companies gaming benchmarking, and then having your OS run like shit, or having sub-par companies associated with your products, that hurts your brand.

Google's primary business is advertising. Guess what? People don't like being advertised to. I don't want advertisements in my Gmail app. At some point, they're going to lose customers to competitors because of this. Excluding search/advertising, Google actually hasn't come out with anything that directly generates them revenue through sales. This is a set-up for disaster if they start to lose market share or if people look for ad-free alternatives.

Also, they aren't really "killing" in market share, since direct market-market comparisons aren't accurate representations of the business as a whole. More useful metrics would be online use, customer satisfaction, operating system adoption, and company-company comparisons. And since they give away Android OS, they are relying on advertising through their applications (gmail/youtube) to generate revenue, which of course annoys customers. Right now people aren't too fed up with it, but if they continue to increase advertising, they will alienate customers.

Eric is under the misguided assumption that Google gives a shit about making hardware when online advertising and online data collection is their business. He also seems to think that these industries are going downhill, despite exponential growth, and that Google should enter into a hilariously over-saturated market.

Amazon makes almost NOTHING on their hardware.. All they care about is advertising and mostly content.

TBH even though I own a Samsung Chormebook I was shocked when I read it's the top selling laptop on Amazon.. It's a great little laptop, I've had it for a year and I've brought it everywhere.. Even dropped it a few times, it still works like a charm. But still I was shocked to see that complete newbie OS outsold Windows and Apple's OS laptops. To outsell those 2 heavyweights for a full year is surprising.
