Media center stuff is pretty well figured out these days. Between VLC, the various Linux programs for controlling satellite and.cable, and the resources that Valve has, I think it's reasonable to expect quality that meets or exceeds Windows 7. If this does well, you can also expect native apps for Netflix and whatnot.
If successful, this will go a long ways towards making Linux the future of gaming. I think it will be successful, so I am pretty happy.

The only way Linux becomes the future is if Linux takes over Windows' market share. Or if processing gets so good that it can be run in virtual boxes with no issues.
What I'm unclear on with SteamOS running windows games on Linux...is exactly how its being run. With the Linux version of steam you have to run games that have a Linux version. With steamOS it sounds like they are going to be running Windows games on Linux somehow...which suggests a virtual machine environment built into the whole thing in some fundamental way.
Unless I've misunderstood and in truth the only option to run Windows steam games is with streaming. Which I'm OK with if the streaming is good enough, but it sucks for everyone who isn't streaming, as they'd be restricted to the few games that have been issued a linux version....and in their case...what's the point? Might as well have a traditional PC and have access to the other 99% of games.

"MS needs to sell its own stuff. The OEMs are dragging them through the mud. They know it as well as we do."
Good to see somebody else advocating what I've been saying for a long time now.
