PC sales drops hurt them, but hurt other companies like Dell way, way more.

The problem is that what they are trying to do won't work in the proprietary business culture they've created. You can't link together that many different devices, and have them operate smoothly, without embracing some form of open source development. It just isn't possible, even with Microsoft's budget.

True, but Apple serves a niche in PCs. And that is opposite to Microsoft, who serves everyone, and makes their money from PCs. PCs and Office software. Or servers intended to run them.

To me a better idea would be to pull back. Get back to your basics, and if you do it well, you can think about all these different devices.

Well I guess my point is that their foundations are eroding. PC sales are down, but that doesn't have to be the case. I don't think they can convert to the Apple type of business model in time, because they have no experience at it. Microsoft doesn't design computers, it sells operating systems. Too much of their business relies upon other companies to do well... whereas Apple controls the entire process, from start to finish.

I think if they want to truly do this strategy, they will have to emulate Google, not Apple. This is kind of a step in the right direction, but I think a better step would be to buckle down on revolutionizing their OS and Office software. Get back to basics before they spread themselves even thinner.

MS still does have some success stories.. Obviously..

BUT their string of failures, especially in the mobile market has to be considered as troubling..

The Zune.. Tablets.. Phones.. Mobile OS.. All fell flat..
