That's probably because never in history has the second amendment come under such never ending attacks from the left.
It's the law of motion. If something is still, it tends to remain still. If something is moving, it tends to remain moving. So, once this attack started, it has maintained itself and so the NRA has had to counter it. They actually don't seem to ask for looser gun laws other than maybe CCW permits being offered in more states, but you never hear of them demanding things like full auto rifles be legalized without class 3 permits or felons being allowed to get their gun rights back after they have served their time and paid their debt to society (which I fully support).
So they aren't really pro-gun to an extreme.
